Catalina Swinburn
The weaving of this documentation on heads of female stone and terracotta sculptures, originally from ancient Greece, which are now displaced and exhibited in institutions across the world is symbolic. Joining this diaspora of emblematic women, Swinburn creates an image of women coming together in collective resistance from across time and space. Many of the sculptures chosen are “kores”, unidentified women, while others are attributed to mythological figures that have shaped history. Combined with documentation on Greek vessels, red and black figures, which narrate both scenes of women's daily life as well as feats and mythological poems, this series of dismantled portraits, ripped from the spines of archaeological books, appear as a collection of mutilated women that have remained in history, although silenced in a continuous search for expression and freedom.
